How Does the Federal Trade Commission
Regulate Tobacco Advertisements?
An important - and practical - question that arises is this: How does the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulate ads for cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco? Here's how FTC answers this key question:
"The FTC can take action if an ad for cigarettes, cigars, or a smokeless tobacco product is deceptive or unfair. In addition, federal law prohibits the advertising of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and little cigars on radio, TV, or other forms of electronic media regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. The FTC also enforces various federal requirements mandating health warnings on advertising, point-ofpurchase displays, and packaging of tobacco products. For more information, ask the FTC for a copy of the brochures Tobacco Products and Cigars: No Such Thing as a Safe Smoke, and the Memorandum to Potential Cigarette Manufacturers and Importers."
