COMPUTER GIANT AGREES TO PAY $290,000 TO SETTLE FTC CHARGES

A recently finalized FTC order with Gateway 2000 requires the computer giant to pay $290,000 to settle FTC charges that Gateway made false and misleading statements in advertising its refund policy and misleading claims about its on-site warranty service. FTC is requiring that the money be paid to the U.S. Treasury since individual consumers who should have received a refund couldn't be identified.

NOTE: A consent agreement is for settlement purposes only and does not constitute an admission of a law violation. When the Commission issues a consent order on a final basis, it carries the force of law with respect to future actions. Each violation of such an order may result in a civil penalty of $11,000.

(Gateway 2000, FTC Dkt. No. C-3844, January 7, 1999.)
